D'Arcy Norman dot Net

video from the 2009 Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer

I lugged my camera and Flip on the Ride to Conquer Cancer, to document some of the ride. It was a pretty epic bike ride – the hardest thing I’ve ever done – but was well worth it. Thank you to everyone that supported me in any way – it definitely made the pain of the [...]

BuddyPress and MultiDB

I’ve been trying to get BuddyPress working on my WPMU installation that uses MultiDB for database partitioning. It’s been cranky, but I just realized I’m a complete idiot because I was overlooking the obvious (and drop dead simple) fix. BuddyPress was acting up because it was creating tables in each blog’s database tableset. But MultiDB makes [...]

find D’Arcy Norman’s iPod

One of the interesting new things in iPod/iPhone OS 3.0 is the new “find my iPod” feature. It’s probably most useful for an iPhone, which could be easily left on a bus or something, and has an always-on 3G connection, but it works just fine for iPods over WIFI as well. It’s close – I’m just [...]

Localizing a Brilliant UK Policy on OSS?

Wow.  It is not so often that you can point to truly enlightened legislation and national policy, but here is one such case.  Pat Masson, just posted some links on the Educause Openness Constituency Group to a fantastic little article titled Government promotes open source for public sector, whose content strikes me as remarkable.  The [...]

Caring About Your Virtual Self

I just had a great experience participating in a group discussion that was based on a TED video talk with Philip Rosedale titled “Second Life, where anything is possible.”  I find the Second Life phenomena very interesting.  It is one of the few topic areas where the smartest people I know, hold very different opinions [...]

Welcome to the Personalized Learning Space

This space is for folks interested in the idea of making learning (online, blended, or hybrid) more personalized. This includes not only learning design and instruction, but also the tools and technologies that can be used to make learning more personal.

The group can collaborate on technical tools and systems, learning design, accessibility, open educational resources, and issues. Some of these might include the use of microformats, frameworks, and the "code" of learning.

We're Managing Learning, not Facilitating It

Graham Attwell's video (in videos section), goes over what Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) are, along with their premise and promise. One thing he said really struck me: "Most educational technology is designed to help manage learning, not to facilitate learning, and not to help us share that learning. And most of that educational technology ignores the informal learning that occurs every day."

Good thoughts.
